Nepotism in govt jobs
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued
notices to the chief secretary Sindh and others on a petition filed
by former city Nazim Naimatullah Khan against nepotism and
favoritism while making appointments in government departments.
Naimatullah Khan alleged that for the last many years the Sindh
government had imposed a complete ban on government recruitments but
the workers of ruling political parties, including Muttahida Qaumi
Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q), secretly managed
to get jobs in various government departments.
He submitted that job opportunities were only available to the
workers of ruling parties while eligible people were being ignored,
as a result of which psychological cases among youth have been
increasing, with some of them even committing suicide due to such
injustices.
Accusing ruling political parties of exercising nepotism, he alleged
that every citizen was aware that the government was appointing
favourite people in many departments including City District
Government Karachi, Sindh Police and Education Department and after
gaining appointments the said employees did not work in their
departments concerned but draw salaries.
He pointed out news reports published in various sections of the
press that MQM and PML have shared fifty-fifty quota in government
jobs.
Naming chief secretary Sindh, secretaries of the education and home
departments as respondents, the court was prayed to declare that
Sindh government’s agreement of allocating party quotas to PML and
MQM was illegal and against the fundamental rights and violation of
Constitution.
The petitioner also prayed the court to direct the respondents to
submit a list of such appointments made during the last five years
and order the government departments to fill all vacancies on merit
through public service commission under the supervision of SHC,
besides taking lawful action against the respondents for making
illegal appointments in government departments.
As the matter was taken up by SHC’s division bench, comprising
Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Zia Pervaiz, petitioner’s counsel
Syed Abdul Waheed advocate told the court that the petition was a
public interest matter as due to alleged nepotism thousands of
qualified persons were being subjected to discrimination. |
